The Challenge: Creating a Dynamic and Reliable Exterior Lighting System
This project presented several unique and significant challenges. First, the requirement for a robust and weatherproof lighting system was paramount, as it needed to withstand Colorado’s diverse and sometimes harsh weather conditions, from intense sun to heavy snow and wind, while maintaining consistent performance and vibrant color output. The sheer scale of illuminating a prominent municipal building also introduced complexities in power distribution and signal integrity over large areas.

Furthermore, the chosen control system had to be not only powerful enough to manage intricate lighting sequences and individual fixture control but also user-friendly for city technicians who would be responsible for programming and managing dynamic displays for various events throughout the year. The specialized nature of the RGB lights, which were custom-ordered from overseas, added a substantial layer of logistical complexity involving international shipping, tariffs, and import taxes, all of which required meticulous planning and execution to ensure timely delivery and budget adherence.

This extensive upgrade in each residence significantly reduced power consumption while providing superior, consistent illumination, enhancing the aesthetic appeal and comfort of every living space.
Advanced Power and Data Distribution
A critical component of this project involved meticulously setting up the power and data infrastructure. We expertly replaced and ran conduit to 56 exterior junction boxes. These specialized connection boxes are designed to accept mains power and feature a built-in Wi-Fi node, enabling them to receive DMX signals wirelessly. This innovative wiring scheme not only simplified the installation process but also provided a flexible and scalable control network for the entire lighting system.
Robust Network Infrastructure
Inside the building, we established the central nervous system for the lighting control. This included installing a splitter box and running dedicated conduit and CAT6 cabling from the electrical room to the splitter box. Furthermore, we installed all necessary conduit, supports, fittings, and boxes to create a complete and resilient system. This meticulous infrastructure setup ensures reliable power and data flow throughout the extensive lighting network.
Precise DMX Cabling for Individual Control
To enable the intricate, individual control of each fixture, precision DMX cabling was paramount. Our team meticulously pulled DMX cable from the main splitter box to each of the 56 individual fixtures. This direct cabling ensures that specific commands from the control system are accurately transmitted to every light, allowing for detailed programming of colors, intensities, and effects across the entire facade.
Intuitive Control System Integration
The heart of the system’s dynamic capabilities lies in its user-friendly control interface. We integrated a Single Universe Pharos touch panel controller with all relevant hardware, enabling seamless connection to and individual or group control of each light. This powerful controller is connected to a Wi-Fi router, which then transmits the DMX signals wirelessly around the building, providing intuitive and comprehensive management of the entire lighting display.
Custom Programming and Collaboration
Our experience extends beyond installation to bringing the lighting system to life. We collaborated closely with Aurora City Hall’s on-site technicians, providing extensive programming labor to create custom holiday RGB light shows and various dynamic sequences throughout the year. A crucial step involved verifying that each of the 56 lights was producing the correct color and wattage output to ensure a perfectly uniform and stunning visual presentation across the entire building facade.
Logistical Expertise for Specialized Materials
A unique aspect of this project was the procurement of highly specialized lighting fixtures. The lights were special ordered from overseas, necessitating meticulous handling of complex logistics, shipping, tariffs, and import taxes. Our team expertly managed these international processes, ensuring the timely and cost-effective delivery of all necessary components to the project site, showcasing our authoritativeness in complex material sourcing.

This transformation elevates the building’s presence, making it a point of pride for the community.
Enhanced Community Engagement and Civic Expression
The ability to program custom lighting displays for holidays, local events, and civic celebrations has provided the City of Aurora with a powerful new tool for community engagement. Residents and visitors can now experience the building as an interactive canvas, fostering a stronger sense of local identity and collective celebration. This dynamic display capability allows the city to visually articulate its spirit and values to the public.
Increased Flexibility and User Control
The sophisticated Pharos touch panel controller provides city technicians with unprecedented flexibility and control over the building’s exterior lighting. They can effortlessly create, schedule, and manage an infinite variety of lighting scenes, adapting the building’s appearance to suit any occasion, time of day, or specific artistic vision. This level of granular control ensures maximum utility and creative potential from the installed system.
Reliable and Weatherproof Performance
Given Colorado’s often unpredictable weather, the selection and installation of high-quality, weatherproof RGB lights, coupled with robust conduit and cabling, were paramount. The system’s design and our meticulous installation ensure reliable performance year-round, regardless of environmental conditions. This durability translates into minimal maintenance needs and consistent visual impact for the city.
Professional Programming for Optimal Impact
Our dedicated labor in programming the system, working hand-in-hand with city technicians, ensures that every custom holiday and event light show is executed flawlessly. The meticulous verification of each light’s color and wattage output guarantees a uniform, high-quality display that maximizes the visual impact and artistic intent of every programmed sequence.
